Last week we discussed the concept of the Five Piece French Girl Wardrobe. After the introduction to that wardrobe principle, you may be quietly starting to plan your Spring/Summer purchases (I know I have!).
Following on from last weeks post, I wanted to put together an early read trend report on where I see SS20 heading. I love forecasting trends! I find it so fascinating, however this year has been a little disjointed. Given that the Northern Hemisphere has been in lockdown for the entire summer season essentially, we haven’t seen those street style looks on bloggers or how trends have translated in stores, given that many retailers cancelled large amounts of stock due to Covid.
Alas! I have still noted down a few early trends that might be worth exploring this season.
Sage
Repeat after me- Sage is the new Emerald! Get ready for a wave of seafoamy goodness this season. Sage is arguably the most key colour we are going to see this season and I am here for it! Best suited to more muted skintones, sage will be a breath of fresh air into your wardrobe. It lends itself particularly well to the laid back vibe of linen, so if you plan to pick up a piece in this hue, thats where I recommend you spend your money. Viktoria and Woods have already delivered sage in their pre season collection. Check it out- its dreamy!
Tonal for Summer
Tonal was set to be a huge trend over winter (before we all were relegated to our homes for a life of loungewear), and its absolutely still relevant for summer. Think head to toe ensembles in white, camel, khaki and even colour! This look is very timeless by nature and is an easy way to effortlessly elevate your style. I have made Pinterest mood boards for an array of tonal looks. Head on over to explore some of the looks I have curated. The key to this trend is together purchase coordinates that are from the same retailer, in the same fabric and shade, or if you are mixing pieces it’s important to mix up textures to create more interest. Think silks back with linen or light seasonal knitwear.

Casual- Iso Chic
There is no escaping it, we have become accustomed to a certain comfortable way of life this year and like it or not, our lives have changed for the foreseeable future. There will be a big focus on the casual element this summer, especially because there are less events on the calendar. The humble tracksuit has emerged as an unlikely MVP this year and I can see this evolving for summer in the form of track short/hoodie coord combinations back with a chunky sneaker for street wear.
Dad Sandals
Thanks to Chanel, the “Dad Sandal” came back with a vengeance last summer. While I am not sure whether we will see it to the same degree on blogs and among the fashion elite, I do feel that it will be prevalent on the high street and will be seen as a much more commercially acceptable style in the coming months. I wouldn’t be investing the $1000 in the Chanel version necessarily, but it is a versatile footwear style that will certainly spice up your looks this season. Zara and Camilla and Marc have some great options, but be patient because I predict everyone from designer to discount department store will have an iteration of this trend. Keep a close eye out from September onward…
Tailored Pants
For the last few years we have been in the depths of skirt season. At last, the tailored pant is once again starting to gain some traction on the street. We are seeing not only the return of cigarette styles, but also cropped and full length wide leg versions. There is a shape to suit everyone, and I plan to go much more in depth on pant trends over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for that.
Longer Line Shorts
The Bermuda has been slowly inching her way back into fashion over the last couple of years. Last year we saw this show up in slim fitting long line shorts teamed back with a matching blazer, which wasn’t the most forgiving shape for the majority. This year, the Bermuda short has much more flow to it and is a much easier wear in my opinion. Lydia Jane Tomlinson is my top inspo for this trend, so make sure you check out her Instagram account. She wears a pair from Arket, which are made from a gorgeous cupro for maximum softness and drape, making them a great option for a lot of body shapes- especially those who have previously felt more self conscious in the short shorts we have seen in seasons past.
